New Delhi : The New Delhi Police on Friday arrested a senior BJP leader for allegedly setting fire to the Beecham House on the occasion of Diwali.
Police sources said the accused was identified as D. K. Raja, who was arrested at his residence.
The accused is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the party’s national executive committee.
A team of officials, including the police, has been rushed to the spot to probe the incident, police sources said.
The incident comes a day after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government announced that it would take steps to ensure safety of people at the shrine in Beechampore district, which has witnessed a series of incidents over the past year.
The shrine, located at a height of nearly 1,000 metres (5,400 feet), is known to be the home of Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha and Lord Vishnu.
The BJP had recently ordered a stringent security operation to curb the spread of illegal activities on the site.
